Epilogue (2 years later)

Luke walked into the bedroom he shared with the man he loved, walked over to the bed, grabbed a pillow and preceded to pummel the lump that was hidden under the blankets.

Chapter 17

So, it was over and life goes on.  That’s what the books say.  To heal you need to put “it” behind you, whatever the HELL “it” is.  But it isn’t that easy.  Or is it?  Everybody has something traumatic, whether it be physically or emotionally, that they need to overcome to be able to continue putting one foot in front of the other.  And that’s exactly what the “refugees” were doing.

Chapter 16

The flight to Texas was uneventful.  In fact, the four “refugees” all took the opportunity to sleep with Sierra nestled against Luke’s chest and Seth nestled against Reid’s.  The twins seemed at home and, as of yet, didn’t seem put out by the separation from Holden.  Their young age made them almost completely oblivious to the drama going on around them the past several weeks.  Initially, they had picked up on the grief they were surrounded with and it took several days for them to be able to sleep through the night again or eat proper meals but, as some of the grief subsided, so did their discontentment.

Chapter 14

Luke leaned into Reid seeking comfort by burying his face in the man’s chest.  Reid’s arms automatically wound themselves protectively around Luke and it was the immense trembling he felt coming off of Luke that kept him from losing all control.  “How is that even possible?” he asked through gritted teeth.

Chapter 12

Reid waited until Luke was down for his scans and, once completed, had members of his surgical team sneak him out of the radiology department and directly into OR #4 where he was waiting already scrubbed up and gowned along with the remainder of his team.  Not a second was spared and the surgery got underway as soon as Reid had a chance to look at the scans and determine how to proceed.
Meanwhile, Bob Hughes was down in the ER going from one exam room to another looking for Luke who should have returned from his scans twenty minutes prior.  Having not found him anywhere, he called down to radiology and was told that the patient had been picked up nearly an hour ago.

Chapter 11

When the 911 dispatcher realized the call she’d just taken involved the significant other of one of Oakdale P.D.’s officers and that said officer was possibly the suspect in the events that took place in their home, she immediately notified her supervisor who, in turn, immediately notified Chief Munson and Detective Margo Hughes.  Margo took it upon herself to break the news to Luke’s cousin, Jack, who insisted, despite everyone’s better judgement, to respond to the scene.  What they all found there was a once peaceful neighborhood that had turned into a war zone with dozens of police cars, news vehicles, first responders, medical examiner vehicles, crime scene investigators, an ambulance and about a hundred neighbors that had come out to take in what was happening around them.

Chapter 10

Reid finished up with his newest consult before heading down to the exam room for Luke’s appointment.  He hadn’t bothered checking in with his service so he wasn’t aware the appointment had been rescheduled.  So, when he walked into the exam room without knocking expecting to find Luke there, he found it completely empty.  He stepped back looking at the room number to make sure he was in the right place and that at his watch to make sure he had the right time and, when he found that he was where he was supposed to be WHEN he was supposed to be there, he became quite concerned.

Chapter 9

Luke walked into the bedroom he’d shared with Nick, the man he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with, and pulled a couple of suitcases out of the back of the closet.  He didn’t know where his new found courage was coming from and he was scared to death at what Nick’s reaction would be.  Would he follow through on his threat to Luke’s brother’s and sister’s or would he finally let Luke go?  He just couldn’t think about that right now.  His priority was just to get the HELL out of there and as far away from Nick Bridges as possible or he really would end up dead.  The thought sent a shiver down his spine.  But he knew, now, that he had to tell the truth not only to himself but to his family as well.  He also knew that, once they found out what had been going on, they’d stand behind him 100% and he had no doubt that his grandmother, Lucinda, would make it her business to make sure Nick never came anywhere near her family again.
